Is it okay to send a wedding gift to a couple before the wedding?

My friends are getting married next month. They are going back to their hometown for the wedding, which is halfway across the country from where they live. I don't live in their hometown either. I wanted to give them a particularly large gift from their wedding registry. Is it okay to send it to them before the wedding? That way I won't have to travel with the large gift and they won't have to lug it back home after the wedding.
